Sasha Pejic could not see the suffering of stray dogs – humiliated, hungry and lonely dogs were everywhere he looked. Death at the hands of zookeepers was the only alternative to life on the streets.
So he took in as many dogs as he could afford and was soon running a shelter for hundreds of dogs.
At Pejic, these dogs that have never had a home are given medical care, food, and soft beds to sleep at night. They are neutered and dogs that need wheels get them too. They love dedicated humans (not to mention a large pack they can play with).
Pejic runs an animal shelter out of an old stable. His work and small staff are supported by the Harmony Fund of America.
“They are loved here,” said Laura Simpson, founder of the foundation.
The animal shelter and its 450 dogs live primarily on donations.
