After his remains were positively identified as being among those found in the wilds of California, Julian Sands, a British actor best known for playing the lead in the 1985 movie A Room with a View, was declared dead.
On January 12, the 65-year-old actor went alone mountain climbing in California’s Mount Baldy. On January 13, his disappearance was confirmed.
Rescue workers looked for Sands but were unable to find him; according to the Washington Post, they had to stop looking for him due to hazardous weather but continued utilizing helicopters and drones.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department today revealed that human remains found on June 24 by hikers in the vicinity of Sands’ disappearance had been positively recognized as Sands’ remains.
According to BBC, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department released a statement saying that “the manner of death is still under investigation, pending the results of additional tests.” We want to express our gratitude to all the volunteers who put in countless hours looking for Mr. Sands.
An accomplished British actor, Sands is most remembered for his breakthrough performance in James Ivory’s 1985 adaptation of E.M. Forster’s A Room with a View, which also starred Helena Bonham Carter.
The movie was one of the 100 greatest British movies of all time, according to the British Film Institute, and it received three Academy Awards.
He also made an appearance in the Oscar-winning film The Killing Fields early in his career. Over the course of his 40-year career, he appeared in more than 150 film and television projects with more than 150 credits.
Arachnophobia, Naked Lunch, Warlock, Ocean’s 13, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and Leaving Las Vegas are a few of his movies. He played recurring parts in the TV shows Smallville and 24.
In 2018, he stated, “I didn’t want to be a Hollywood actor,” claiming he wanted to challenge himself as an actor. “I was looking for exotic items that would help me escape myself… I believe that I am a little monotonous.
Despite not being an A-list celebrity, Sands was respected by both fans and critics for his versatility and unpredictability. He was consistently honorable, decent, and good, according to former New York Times film critic Janet Maslin. “I don’t recall him making a mistake,” she said.
In addition to being an actor, Sands loved the outdoors and hiking, which ultimately contributed to his death.
The actor’s family reportedly already knew that Sands had passed away, but this revelation will undoubtedly bring them comfort.
The family said in a statement that they “continue to hold Julian in our hearts” and that they had “bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer.”
His brother Nick Sands remarked, “I have come to terms with the fact he’s gone and for me that’s how I’ve dealt with it,” adding that he had already said his “goodbyes.”
Sadly, a brilliant actor’s life came to an end. Sands, Julian
